Local writers offer books for kids
South Carolina authors make a splash with several new children’s books

This month’s common theme is not birthdays, camp or travel. It’s South Carolina. A South Carolina author wrote each featured book this month.

Deanna Anderson is a Midlands area author who saw her childhood dream become reality when she self-published “Imagica” in 2006.
“Imagica” is a middle reader adventure that conjures up images of “Alice in Wonderland” and other magical tales. This tale is not on par with those classics, although it is a likeable romp through the possibilities of imagination.
“Imagica” follows Eli, an 11-year-old boy with no imagination. Eli’s grandfather makes it his business to convince Eli that imagination is important and useful. So the grandfather tells Eli a special story of a magical stagecoach and a very imaginative land — Imagica.
Although interesting, Eli’s journey never seems very urgent or really all that important. At times the pacing is slow and the end uses a literary cliché as his journey begins and ends at his grandfathers feet listening to a story.
