Mature Chicagoans will remember Officer Leonard Baldy, who guided them from the air through difficult traffic while instilling in them the value of driving safety. Younger people anywhere will be encouraged to emulate this simple, yet extraordinary man.
Baldy wasa traffic cop who rode above the city of Chicago in a helicopter reporting to those below on the conditions on the streets and highways. A man exceptionally involved in his city, he sometimes even alit on those streets to aid someone in need or aid in the capture of a wrongdoer.
Leonard Baldy was of a mixed Polish and German heritage, gut grew up in the Polish neighborhoods of Chicago known as Bucktown and Logan Square. His mother, whose maiden name was Barczynski, had a strong influence on him, so a Polish Catholic church, Kielbasa and polka music were no strangers to him.
