John Sears Barker, a U.S. Information Agency veteran, in "7 Steps Down: A Novel of World War II Anzio" (PublishAmerica, $19.95), documents the slow progression of a seven-man U.S. Army squad making its bloody, error-ridden and eventually victorious way north toward Rome from Anzio, Italy. The time is 1944. Barker's novel is cited in a Wikipedia entry on Anzio as a research source.
