Mary Ann Carman concerns herself with languaging, the way people speak, and the way they practice their lives—both materially and spiritually. The author of Never to Love listens intently when another is speaking, always studying their eyes and their gestures. She also notices immediately when someone uses a phrase or word that seems unique to that person, a slice of vernacular that can define the individual more clearly than the rest of the conversation. You would think she ripped this page right out of the book of fiction writing/teaching legend John Gardner, or her friend and editor, poet/fictionist Harvey Stanbrough, except for one thing: This is an indelible part of Mary Ann’s character.
