The toll of poverty: a Tulsa family's story
The family of eight parked at the homeless shelter in a ramshackle, maroon Ford they bought for $400.
The mother, Judy Harkness, climbed from the only car door that opened and stared into the Tulsa County Emergency Shelter as if it were the end.
She feared that if she, her husband and six children went in, they may never leave, never escape the dark homelessness that had swallowed their lives.
