Civil war Journals'author to speak at Library Oct. 18
The Times, Florida Today, October 4, 2006 by Jennifer Torres

Gloria Grantloves to tell stories.

Her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and many cousins can attest to it.

They were just some of the many folks who used to stop by her home to hear Grant spin tales of the past.

But it wasn't until Grant was faced with hard times that her stories found their way to paper. After being diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing a double masstectomy, her doctor advised her to keep a journal as a way of relieving stress.

She did.

Soon the journal was replaced by a manuscript she called "Mawmaw's Cooking" The book was filled with recipes for cooking such things as rabbit, a secret recipe for moonshine and plenty of good, old fashioned Southern wisdom. It was mainly distributed out to family.

But Grant's next writing endeavor produced a book that was much more far reaching . Grant's "Can You Hear Me? Miss Sarah's Civil Wae Journals" has been published and distributed nationwide.

"I wrote it before hurricane katrina when I lived block from the beach Waveland Mississippi." said Grant."The hurricane destroyed myentire home, everything was gone. But this story survived the storm because I had already sent it out to the publisher."

The book is about the journal of a 9-year old girl named Sarah, who lived during the Civil War.

"I had never read anything about the children of the Civil War, so I did a lot of research." said Grant The bookd main audience is teens and adults.

After Katrina, Grant moved to Melbourne to be near her son, who lives in Indian Harbor Beach she learned her manuscript had been chosen for publication.

"It was the one thing that survived the storm." she said.

satelitte Beach Library Director Nancy grout said the library is looking forward to hosting Grant during Teen Read Week. "Everyone is invited to listen to Ms. Grant talk about her book and the creative writing process." Grout said.
