As a physician assistant with the 3rd Squadron of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Marshville native Tom Haigler got an up-close look at battlefield horrors during Operation Desert Storm.
That’s only part of the war experience, however, and Haigler has captured it all in a new book, “131 Days.” He tells of the boredom of being in the middle of the desert waiting for the war to begin, of the loneliness of missing his wife and children. In vivid, sometimes spicy, language he tells of the irritation of waiting for the Army to deliver mail from home or equipment needed to do his job. There’s the disgust of fellow soldiers defecating in their own shower stalls and leaving the mess for others, the mystery of whether a co-worker will crack under pressure when the shooting starts and the pain of having to deny food to hungry Iraqi children.
