officer recalls murder cases in writing novels

The investigator took in every detail of the dead woman's apartment. He noticed the smell of blood in the air, the faint outline of a bloody footprint on the carpet, and the remnants of the scrambled eggs the killer fixed for himself.
The scene, though found in a mystery novel, is based on a real Dallas police investigation that took place decades ago. Bill Hamner, the author, worked for the Dallas Police Department from 1967 to 1974.
