Houston to publish "Southern Poetry"
The Sylvester Local News, October 4, 2006 by Kristy Maddox

George Ray Houston, a life-time resident of Sylvester, contracted with Publish America in Frederick, Md., Wednesday Sept. 13, to publish his manuscript "Southern Poetry."

His contract will conclude in seven years.

Houston has written poetry for more than 50 years and his lifetime dream of having it published has now come true.

His poetry is 19th century style. "I enjoy the poetry of yesteryear," Houston said.

He writes about his God, family, nature, fiction, non-fiction and "his priceless southern heritage," he said. The book will be published within the next 12 months.

In 1963, he graduated from Worth County High School. He performed in the very first Ram band under the direction of Eugene Wyles, where he played the trumpet. He also wrote for the high school newspaper. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany.

He is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Edward Houston II and the husband of Virginia Johns Parker "Ginger" Houston. They are both retired from the United States Civil Service Commission, Department of the Navy, U. S. Marine Corps. He is a member of First Baptist Church of Sylvester, the Worth County Historical Society and a charter member, officer and poet laureate of Worthy County's Yancy Independents, Sons of the Confederate Veterans.

On Saturdays, you can catch him fishing with his grandson at Lake Blackshear. They spend Saturday mornings there until they catch "the big one." Houston truly believes in hometown traditions, especially when it comes to family and poetry.
