Toni
Rich, longtime South Jersey resident who is well known in
Atlantic City and area education circles, has published her
first book. “They Stay the Same” is expected to be released
in stores in September.
The new
book is a passionate family saga, Rich said. The story goes
like this:
After
migrating to America, the Russian, Jake Rosen, and the Italian,
Al Mareno, became business partners and steadfast friends.
Their families celebrated all religious holidays together.
It was a common sight for their children, especially the Jewish
Gary and the Catholic, Tessa, to be kneading dough for challah,
dyeing eggs for Easter, trimming Christmas trees and lighting
the Hanukkah Menorah.
They had
an ecumenical existence until the kids fell in love. The people
who loved them were the most resistant to this relationship.
How did things get so ugly? It wasn’t only unfathomable to
the kids, but also to all who had watched the closeness of
these families throughout the years. Was all of that just
a farce? What becomes of this relationship? How dos it overflow
into subsequent generations?
“You won’t
be prepared for the ending,” Rich said.
Rich was
a school nurse at Atlantic City High School for more than
30 years. Her husband, Jack Eisenstein, who was recently inducted
into the South Jersey Football Coaches’ Hall of Fame, served
as superintendent of school for 19 years in Atlantic City
and has held interim positions throughout the area, most recently
as interim superintendent of the Pleasantville School System.
“My experiences
as a late blooming author encouraged me to let other seniors
know that one can keep active and achieve dreams at any age,”
she said.
Shore
Memorial Hospital has invited Rich to be a presenter Sept.
17 in its Wellness Center’s Series, “Its Never To Late,” and
in the fall she will be attending an international book-signing
in Iceland hosted by her publisher, Publish America.
