Message: I haven't sent my membership fee in yet. They just started charging and I've been in the middle of money issues, so I'll be joining in about a 2 months -- moving, changing jobs. But I still get their postings all the time. I'm a lurker. :)
What part of the world are you in? I'll be in the Philadelphia area shortly. Last year I went to a sci fi con there and Broad Universe invited me to do my first reading. Nancy Moore is just the nicest person. She gave up her reading time so that 4 others could read. It was my first experience and one I'll never forget.

Message: Dinah,
I'm from Philly, or really, just the otherside of the bridge about twenty minutes away from Center City, in New Jersey. I've seen your book on Amazon, it looks pretty cool.
Kristan,
I thought about SFWA, but I wasn't sure if they considered PA a small press and therefore, making me not eligble for full member status. Then, I said, ah screw them, anyway (the sf/fantasy world is very difficult to get noticed in, though).
Either of you going to the WFC in DC this year? I put in for a dealer table, still haven't heard if I'm going to get it (if so I will take some other author's books as well as my own). I'm going anyway, I'll pass out fliers if nothing else.

Message: Hi Dinah and Diana,
I live in New York City. Because I've been primarily a playwright, I'm not as familiar with the sci-fi/fantasy world in terms of conferences, events, etc. I'd love to attend some of those events, though.
Once my novel comes out, I'll apply to SFWA too. As far as I can tell, PA fulfills their requirements, but we'll see. I think their major concern is not taking authors who are self-published. In any case, I have a long way to go yet; I'm just now sending in the response to my Author's Questionnaire, so my novel won't be out for sometime, I'm sure.
I guess I have a lot of hard work ahead of me. Eek!

What is the "WFC in DC?" My fiction is borderline horror -- psycho terror. And I'm in DC area . . . & curious as to the whole genre org thing, as well as this (I'm assuming) convention you mention.

Message: Linda,
WFC= World Fantasy Convention, it's in DC this year. It's right around Halloween like from that Thrusday to that Sunday. If you go, hopefully you'll see me at one of the dealer tables in the dealer room. I'll have to check my info from the WFC for the hotel and such details (I think the Hyatt). More on this later.

Message: I've joined over the years a few of the varied organizations (never the SFWA though) and after the year was through, I can't say that I ever got very much from the membership. So I've been very careful about joining these things. Like I mentioned I got quite a lot from BroadUniverse and I'm not even a full member yet. Doors have not closed (or open) for belonging one way or another.
I would really like to go to the convention this year. I have to get settled into a new city, new house, new job, etc. first, before I decide if I can do it. I've missed so much these last few months. I really wanted to go to HorrorFind down in Hunt Valley, MD -- I think it was last weekend -- just can't do it and still pack up this house. But keep me posted on what your plans are. Maybe we can all meet. Ya know what we SHOULD do, is put together an author panel on a topic and go as a team to one of these things -- that's alot of fun. (And there are sales involved!) Or a reading.
We can show the world what women in horror/sci fi/fantasy are really like! The four of us would knock them dead! (I can't wait to hear what some of the guys will say to this!)

Message: Rumour has it (a reliable source I will give up in private email) that SFWA is trying to purposely close the doors on PA authors. To do this they are considering a royalty payment requirement.
I say any organization, be it a publisher, contest or association, that makes its money off the backs of authors is not worth belonging to. Obviously if they require a royalty minimum they want to ensure that you can front fees (such as membership).

Thx for the link! I read thru the info & saw that, as you mentioned, tables will be in the dealer's room. That'd be my main interest @ this point & I get the sense that I'm too late to jump in the boat.
Oh well. Either way, let me know when you're getting in & if you have free time. Heck, if nothing else, my office is blocks from where the action will be. W/the city's metro system, it's easy to get around. Maybe we could, as they say in the city, "do lunch." Here's my e-mail:

Message: I sent in an application to the SFWA about two weeks ago, to see if my new novel, Twilight, would qualify me (after all, according to their Web Site, a professional publisher is one listed in the LMP, and PublishAmerica is indeed listed there)... However, I have not heard back from them yet... I will be interested to see if they accept my application or not (I was already turned down by the Writer's Guild of America because PA doesn't pay a "significant" advance). But I'll keep any interested updated in my progress with the SFWA (or lack thereof).
Thanks for the information about the WFC, I may have to check it out...

Message: Here's another good site: http://www.scificonventions.com/
If I can get my act together (cough) before August 15th, I'd love to go to HorrorFind in Hunt Valley -- I thought it was in July and I'd missed it, but looked for the site again after seeing Stacey's interest in cons. Not sure where the guys here are from, but those of us in the DC, MD, PA could ramble around the haunted halls! My husband likes to go to these things because he says the people are so strange. I always tell him to STOP TALKING ABOUT MY FUTURE FANS THAT WAY!
(Of course we ARE strange, but hey, how would anyone judge normal if not for us?!)
James, regarding the SFWA, I agree with you wholeheartedly.

Message: We have had quite a bit of success selling our book at Sci-Fi Cons, most recently at CastleCon in Fairfax, VA. We'll be at the WFC and possibly some of the other big Cons such as PhilCon (Philadelphia) and LosCon (LA). Even better than the dealers room is finding away to be invited as an "author guest." They may ask you to speak or appear on a panel in addition to doing a signing.

Message: While my novel isn't even out yet (I haven't gotten the galleys yet)and I don't know when it will be, I'll still post this: I'd love to plan to share a table (and the expenses involved of doing so) at a conference where we could sell our novels. I don't know who to contact about these things or how one finds out well in advance when a conference is being planned but if someone is willing to coach me on this I'll be happy to make the initial contact (once I have a release date).
In the meantime, I'm going to try to make it to a couple of conferences to get a feel for them. I'll let you and your wife know where I'm going to be Michael.
Cheers to everyone.
