Blind author envisions sci-fi future

Despite being deaf and almost completely blind, there was a time when Jonathan Backstrom would head out on the Charles River in a high-speed laser sailboat.
I used to hide my cane in the bushes and then walk in and take the community boat club test, Backstrom recalls. It was quite an adventure.
