Writer is in 'toon with The New Yorker
The Courier-Journal, June 5, 2007 by Larry Muhammad
Louisville writer Fairleigh Brooks, who once dissected the perfect joke in "The Best" essay for The Courier-Journal, has won a popular cartoon caption-writing contest at America's leading literary magazine -- The New Yorker.
"I was pleased when they told me I'd won," said Brooks, "but I'd already tried 35 times so I wasn't jumping up and down. I looked at it as sort of an exercise and just did it, kind of like writing a country song. You can't really think about it. I'd give myself about 3 minutes, come up with one or two captions, select the best one and that was it."
