The title of Maxine A. Browne's memoir, 149 Palmer Street, Akron, Ohio, ``The Way We Were,'' carries with it a measure of defiance. Palmer Street hasn't existed since 1961, as Browne found to her outrage when she decided to write the story of her central Akron neighborhood.
