Allure of 'Des Moines' no mystery to author

When he began his first mystery novel nearly a decade ago, Alfio Giovannini wasn't quite sure which language he should write in, English or Italian.
But the native of a small town in the Italian Alps had no doubts about the setting - his adopted hometown of Des Moines.
