New novel charts story of three generations of Tennesseans

Lauren Haynes learned to read by studying the walls of the Depression-era home where she was raised in Murfreesboro.
“I learned to read on these walls by putting the words together,” she said, “and I was 3 years old.”
Haynes, now 74, didn’t lay her eyes on a real book except for her father’s worn Bible until she was 4 years old and her brother went off to school.
