North Canton mom writes loving look at life, Little League
Akron Beacon Journal, May 14, 2006 by Barbara McIntyre
Rae Showen is Tommy's mom. Now that the baseball season has started, she says ``Hi, I'm Tommy's mom'' a lot, and it's also the title of her little book about Little League.
Showen describes the personalities of other Little League parents, from Whiners to Schmoozers, and reflects on the religious quality of baseball. Her analogies can be a little lavish (``Children represent every parent's extra inning''), but she shows common sense as she writes about good judgment and second chances, and genuine joy as she describes Little Leaguers in a belly-flop competition in a motel swimming pool.
Hi, I'm Tommy's Mom: A Sweet, Simple Book about Life and Little League Baseball (41 pages, softcover) costs $7.95 from www.tatepublishing.com. Showen lives in North Canton and teaches at Malone College.
