Story of Survival
The Warwick Beacon, February 2, 2006 by Elizabeth Seal

Most people can’t imagine living through it, let alone writing about it and then putting their picture on the cover.

Nevertheless, Herald reporter Meri Kennnedy calls her recently released book My Enemy, Myself, a first-person chronicle of her years as a subject of sexual abuse, followed by her decade-long healing process a “dream come true.” The book, which maintains a surprisingly matter-of-fact and even at times upbeat tone despite the weight of the subject, walks the reader through Kennedy’s experiences being molested by her oldest brother, neighbors and, later, middle-aged “boyfriends,” wrapped around her reminisces of the time she spent as an adult in psychotherapy and in locked hospital wards following suicide attempts. The book also includes poems she wrote starting in college poems that help give another view into her mind and emotional state at varying points in her life.
