Battered woman recounts tale of horror in Orangeburg

ORANGEBURG — It's been almost 20 years since Hedda Nussbaum made news as a long-time battered woman whose boyfriend finally killed their adopted daughter in a fit of rage.

But Nussbaum's story riveted an audience of 235 at Dominican College yesterday as she gave an account of her life with the controlling and violent partner she at first thought was "Mr. Right."

"I never thought that anyone who loved me could hurt me," said Nussbaum in a talk sponsored by the Rockland Family Shelter, a nonprofit agency that provides services to 2,200 victims of domestic violence. "Abuse is very subtle. Abusers are very subtle. Abusers are very charming."
