Former resident debuts memoir of life in Monkey Corner

Jerry “Rocky” Romano has come a long way from Monkey Corner.

He grew up at the crossroads of Malden and Everett, on the upper side of Mills Street in a neighborhood affectionately called “Monkey Corner,” named by locals after one legendary animal in a long-defunct corner pet shop.

The Malden native — who also lived in Medford, and later Hingham before retiring to California — made a career in the publishing industry, writing a true “rags to riches” tale into his own life history as he overcame the poverty and disadvantages of his youth.
