Waterloo woman authors first book, starting another

"Write what you know" is a familiar mantra that Vanessa Winters has taken to heart. The Waterloo author's first book, "Detour," traces the life of Calvina, a young woman who struggles through conflicts in relationships and within herself. Many of Calvina's experiences, admitted Winters, mirror her own.

"Most of it is me ... I didn't have to do research for this book at all," said Winters. "The main character went through a lot of things, with her bad temper and her harsh judgment of others ... All of what she experienced shaped her personality."
