Novel Career Takes Off
Lancashire Evening Post, August 15, 2005 by Rachel Dearden
It is a proud week for author Shelagh Watkins. After three years of hard slog she is finally seeing her first published novel soaring up the sales charts.
Mr. Planemaker's Flying Machine is the coming together of inspiration and determination for the former pupil of Leyland's Balshaws High School. Shelagh started writing academically in 1997 and a year later she had set to work on her first novel, The Power of Persuasion. "I went to the library and started from there, going through old newspapers in the newspaper room. I did my research and then from there I started to write. I just went for it."
When the novel was finished it was very well received by many top UK publishers. However, none of them was prepared to accept a manuscript from a first-time author.
